How Did Prem Sagar Die? Son Of 'Ramayan' Creator Ramanand Sagar Passes Away At 84, Last Rites Today

Veteran director, producer, and cinematographer Prem Sagar, the son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away today, August 31, 2025, in Mumbai. Reports confirmed that the cinematographer breathed his last at 10 a.m., after battling prolonged illness. He was 84 at the time of his passing. 

What was the cause of Prem Sagar’s death?

While the exact reason for Prem Sagar’s death remains undisclosed, reports have revealed that the veteran producer had been unwell for quite some time. Shortly before his death, Prem Sagar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, but on doctors’ advice, he was shifted back home this morning. Unfortunately, not long after this, he took his last breath.

Prem Sagar’s final rites were scheduled to be held this afternoon at 3 p.m. at Pawan Hans cremation ground in Juhu, Mumbai. Family, friends, and members of the film and television fraternity are expected to gather to pay their final respects. His demise marks the end of an era for the legendary Sagar family.

Arun Govil pays tribute to Prem Sagar

Prem Sagar was a prominent figure behind the iconic 1987 television series, Ramayan. As the son of Ramanand Sagar, he worked closely with the filmmaker under the banner of Sagar Arts. After his demise, actor Arun Govil, who played ‘Lord Ram’ in Ramayan, took to social media to mourn the loss. Govil wrote:

“The news of the demise of Shri Prem Sagar ji, son of the late Shri Ramanand Sagar ji—who, through the Ramayan TV serial, brought Lord Shri Ram’s dignity, ideals, and teachings to every household via electronic media—and a renowned film producer himself, is deeply saddening. We pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant the departed soul a place at His divine feet and to give strength to the bereaved family to bear this profound grief. Om Shanti.”

A glimpse into Prem Sagar’s storytelling legacy

Prem Sagar was one of the oldest alumni of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) from the 1968 batch. After Ramanand Sagar, he carried forward the Sagar family’s legacy through Sagar Arts. The director also worked alongside his legendary father to produce several iconic projects, including Ramayan, Vikram Aur Betaal, and Shri Krishna
