'Hostage' Ending Explained: Suranne Jones' Tense Thriller Ends In Betrayal, Revenge And Redemption

Netflix's political thriller series, Hostage, follows the story of the newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 'Abigail Daton' (Suranne Jones). However, in the very beginning of her big run, she faces an unimaginable threat: her husband, 'Alex' (Ashley Thomas), is kidnapped during a trip to Guiana. To add to the mess, things take a drastic turn as the kidnapping escalates into an international crisis when 'Abigail' and visiting French President, 'Vivienne Toussaint' (Julie Delpy) are confronted by masked kidnappers making impossible demands. Stuck between love and responsibility, who will 'Abigail' choose: her husband or her country?

Will 'Alex' and the doctors be rescued?

Hostage is a true political thriller, with layers of secrets, illusions and ploys. However, the biggest concern remains whether 'Alex' and the other doctors are able to return safely. Well, they are rescued by a French military unit coordinated by President, 'Vivienne Toussaint'. Despite the threat of a leaked video involving her and her stepson, 'Matheo', 'Vivienne' intervenes and puts the mission in order.

What happened at 10 Downing Street?

Following the rescue, the video of 'Vivienne' and 'Matheo' is leaked. However, with reporters circling his home, 'Matheo' sneaks out with a laptop owned by his girlfriend, 'Saskia Morgan', to 10 Downing Street with evidence that she had been spying on him and was related to a dismissed military personnel who was angry with 'Abigail's' defence cuts. Unfortunately, before they could examine the device, it blew up, killing 'Vivienne'. As the Defence Secretary, 'Dan Ogilvy', takes over as interim PM and declares a national emergency, 'Abigail' begins investigating a conspiracy that is far bigger and messier than she imagined.

Who is behind the kidnapping and demise of 'Vivienne'?

It is later revealed that the entire ploy is orchestrated by a former British soldier from the 3rd Battalion, 'John Shagan'. The introduction gives us an insight into his beef with 'Abigail', as when she was a junior minister, she authorised an evacuation in Belize that killed his pregnant fiancee. 'General Joseph Livington' also plays a central role in the revenge scheme, as he was opposed to the military cuts and used disaffected soldiers to destabilise the country.

Once the evidence is found, 'Jospeh' is arrested and 'Abigail' is reinstated as PM. As for 'John Shagan' and his allies remaining at large, they locate 'Abigail's' family and instruct 'Saskia' to kill 'Sylvie' and 'Matheo', while forcing 'Alex' to call the PM. However, 'Matheo' secretly contacts the police and overpowers 'Saskia'. 'Sylvie' picks up a fallen gun and aims it at 'John', who tried to provoke her by recalling how he got her grandfather murdered. 'Sylvie' ends up shooting 'John', moments before the police arrive, ending the threat.
