Hema Malini Talks About Her Love Story Brewing On Sets Of 'Sholay' With Dharmendra, '..Led To Love'

Hema Malini Talks About Her Love Story Brewing On Sets Of 'Sholay' With Dharmendra, '..Led To Love'

Hema Malini and Dharmendra are one of the loved couples, and their love story is known to all. The veteran superstar, Dharmendra, was already married with children when he fell head-over-heels in love with Hema Malini. The couple had worked with each other in many films before getting married, and it was on the sets of Sholay, where their friendship turned into love. Recently, Hema Malini talked about the same.

Hema Malini and Dharmendra starrer cult film, Sholay will complete fifty years of it's release on August 15, 2025. The film also featured Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. The two power couples made the film even more exciting for generations to come. Recently, in an interview with NDTV, Hema Malini revealed how her real-life love story with Dharmendra sparked in their on-screen chemistry.

Hema Malini revealed that Dharmendra was very fond of her, and they had a lovely relationship as they had worked with each other in many movies. She accepted that they had seen each other during happy times to problematic ones. Their friendship soon turned into love. She said:

"He was very fond of me as I was of him. We had a lovely relationship because we had worked on so many movies together. We shared so much with each other - sometimes they were problems, sometimes it was happiness. Eventually, friendship led to love, maybe that's what was reflected on the big screen too, in the film. It's natural, isn't it? A lovely friendship ultimately leads to love and care for each other."

In the cult classic, Sholay, Dharmendra played the character of 'Veeru' and Hema Malini portrayed the role of 'Basanti'. Her character got extremely famous, and the way she nailed the chulbuli tangewali is still loved by many. Earlier, in an interview with NDTV, Hema Malini revealed that she has fond memories of shooting the famous 'Mandir' scene with Dharmendra in the movie. 

Hema Malini revealed that it was the first scene they shot of the film, and they had a lot of fun. Hema Malini revealed that her character in the scene was praying to Lord Shiva. Recalling the happy times of shooting on the sets of Sholay, Hema Malini said:

"The Mandir scene was the first scene I shot. It was a lot of fun. So innocently, Basanti was accepting everything and answering back to Lord Shiva. Everything was very different. Shooting happened outdoors in hot summers; I don't think we shot anything indoors. Even Ramanagara in Karnataka, where the climax scene happens, is as it was. They have not built anything there."

For those who don't know, Dharmendra and Hema Malini's love blossomed around 1970. They were working in the film, Tum Hassen Main Jawan. Since then they have worked in several films including Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Alibaba Aur 40 Chor. Hema and Dharmendra's relationship survived the rollercoasters of life because they always made an effort to understand each other. 

When Dharmendra married Hema Malini, he didn't divorce his first wife, Prakash Kaur. He continued to take his role as a husband and father of the children, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Earlier, during Hema Malini's appearance at Kapil Sharma's comedy show with her daughter, Esha Deol, she revealed the importance of cooking. She shared that in the initial years of her marriage, she never cooked for Dharmendra.
