Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee, one of Indian television’s most adored couples, have a love story that goes beyond the usual fairy tale romance. Gurmeet and Debina’s journey: from having a Rs. 500 bank balance to stardom

While many know them as the OG ‘Ram-Sita’ jodi of Hindi television, Gurmeet and Debina’s real-life love story was not bereft of challenges. When their paths crossed for the first time together back in 2006, they were both among the top 30 contestants in a talent hunt show, struggling to make it big in the entertainment industry. 

Gurmeet, who hailed from a humble background, had only Rs. 500 in his bank account when he first moved to Mumbai to pursue his dreams. Recently, in a candid chat with Humans of Bombay, Gurmeet opened up about how difficult those days were and how Debina stood by him like a rock. He recalled:

“I remember only having a bike and I didn’t even have money to buy petrol. Surviving in Mumbai was difficult in those days and in a moment like that, when a girl comes into your life who shows that belief in you…that’s very important.”

Despite his financial struggles, Debina’s parents accepted him wholeheartedly. He was amazed at their support. Gurmeet shared:

“I had met Debina’s parents. They treated me like their son. I had Rs 500-600 in my account. Imagine, her father knew that and also knew that his daughter loves this guy. Who would want a guy having Rs 500-600 marry their daughter? Even then her parents supported me.”

Gurpreet and Debina’s secret wedding

What many don’t know is that Gurmeet and Debina had already sealed their fate in a secret wedding, long before their grand celebration in 2011. When Gurmeet was only 19 years old and struggling to make a career in the industry, he feared losing Debina, as her career had started to take off in South Indian cinema. So, when Debina jokingly said she wanted to get married, he took it seriously.

In an interview with Instant Bollywood, Gurmeet opened up about the secret wedding that even their parents were unaware of till they rose to fame with the show, Ramayana. Debina thought it was a joke, but Gurmeet had made all the preparations. The actor stated:

"Usne kaha, ‘mera mann kar raha hai mai aau or shaadi karle’, maine kaha, 'Haan, shaadi kar lete hai kisi ko batayege nahi. Tum aao tab tka mai pori taiyaari karta hoon'... usko laga ki majak ho raha hoga, mai ne kaha boss yahi mauka hai."

Debina’s IVF Journey

While their love story flourished, life threw another challenge at them: the struggle to become parents. Debina was diagnosed with endometriosis, which made natural conception difficult. She underwent multiple failed IUI and IVF cycles over five years. 

Finally, their prayers were answered, and Debina conceived their first child, Lianna, through IVF. The couple was overjoyed to welcome their little one in April 2022. Surprisingly, just a few months later, Debina conceived naturally and gave birth to their second daughter, Divisha.
