Graham Greene breathed his last on September 1, 2025, at a hospital in Toronto. It was Greene's agent, Michael Greene, who confirmed the heartbreaking news of the actor's demise to Deadline. As per an early report from Variety, Greene passed away due to a prolonged illness related to old age. For the uninitiated, Greene was one of the most successful Canadian actors, who made a place for himself in Hollywood despite being among the first indigenous Canadian actors. Greene's immense determination paved the way for future generations.
Canada has given Hollywood global stars like Ryan Reynolds, Keanu Reeves, Rachel McAdams, Jim Carrey, and many more, but Graham Greene was different. The reason behind this is that, despite taking the ordinary path of entering comedy movies, the late actor preferred and perfected dramatic roles with a certain depth and nuance. In a career spanning four decades, Greene has given so many memorable acting performances in a series of successful films like Dances With Wolves (1990), Thunderheart (1992), Maverick (1994), The Green Mile (1999), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Skins (2002), and Wind River (2007).
Graham Greene was born in June 1952 in Ohsweken, on Canada's Six Nations Reserve in Ontario. Not many people are aware that before entering the acting world, Greene worked as a draftsman, welder, audio technician, and steelworker. He began his acting career on television with the show, The Great Detective (1979) and made his film debut in the sports biographical drama, Running Brave (1983).
However, it was Graham Greene's character "Kicking Bird (Zintka Nagwaka)" in Dances With Wolves that made him earn an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Apart from this, he won several prestigious awards like the Grammy Award, Gemini Award, Canadian Screen Award, and a Dora Mavor Moore Award.
Apart from being a legendary Canadian actor, Graham Greene was also loved and admired for the way he led his personal life with Hilary Blackmore. For the uninitiated, Hilary and Graham got married on December 20, 1990, and together they welcomed two children, Lucy Greene and Francis Hugh Greene, in their sweet paradise. While Greene was always under the spotlight, courtesy of his immense success in Hollywood, Hilary succeeded in creating her own idenity in the film and theatre business.

Even before meeting Graham Greene, Hilary Blackmore was working as a renowned stage manager and actress in Canadian theatre. Some of her memorable acting performances were seen in recognised projects like The Sleep Room and Love and Human Remains. Instead of picking up roles that would've given Hilary major spotlight or fame, she stuck to her principle of opting for roles with substance or visibility.
Hilary Blackmore never received the kind of recognition she deserved for supporting her husband, managing kids, and giving herself all in her work simultaneously. For the uninitiated, Graham Greene went through an extremely rough patch in 1997, when he faced a major depressive episode. At that time, it was his wife, Hilary, who helped her come out of that depressive phase. There was a series of ups and downs in Greene's life, and Hilary was always there standing by his side like a true companion. Despite being the wife of one of the greatest Canadian actors ever, Hilary always preferred to stay low-profile while maintaining her own identity.
Kevin Costner's film, Dances with Wolves (1990), is the highlight of Graham Greene's acting career, as it made the latter earn an Academy Award nomination. Another reason the film is so close to Greene's heart is that he found the love of his life, Hilary Blackmore, on the set of Dances With Wolves. According to a report on Instantcollan.com, Hilary was working on the production of Dances With Wolves, and what sparked as a professional connection soon turned into a beautiful love story. After dating each other for several months, they got married in December 1990.
The reason why Graham Greene and Hilary Blackmore were often labelled as a miracle couple, Hollywood's rare couple, or legendary celebrity couple, is due to the fact that their marriage lasted for more than 34 years. Greene and Hilary were inches away from completing 35 years in December 2025, but death did them apart. Thus, it's fair to say that Greene and Hilary were a miracle couple because at a time when the showbiz industry was flooded with celebrity divorces, they kept people believing in true love.
We hope God gives immense strength to Graham Greene's wife, Hilary Blackmore and their children during this tough time.
