Reggae Singer, George 'Fiji' Veikoso Dies At The Age Of 55, Was The Voice Behind 'Let Me Be The One'

George 'Fiji' Veikoso, known as the voice behind the popular theme song, 'Let Me Be The One' from 'Baywatch', has passed away.

Reggae Singer, George 'Fiji' Veikoso Dies At The Age Of 55, Was The Voice Behind 'Let Me Be The One'

George Brooks Veikoso, professionally known as Fiji, was a musician, vocalist, songwriter, music producer and actor. He was born in Buretu, Tailevu, Fiji, on May 10, 1970, and was a proud Fijian. He started his career by performing for 5 US dollars and soon became the face of Fijian talent. However, the 55-year-old recently passed away and left a massive hole in the music industry.

Fijian singer, George Veikoso, passed away on July 23, 2025. The singer was only 55 years old when the sudden news left several of his fans heartbroken. The news of his demise was shared by Polynesian Music on social media. The music company took to their Instagram handle on July 24, 2025, and revealed that a 'beautiful soul was called home'. They added:

"A life so full, so meaningful. Fiji was more than an artist. He was a movement, a voice for the people, a light in the dark. There was, and always will be, only one Fiji. His music wasn’t just something we listened to. It was something we lived through. It was the soundtrack to our childhoods, our family parties, our car rides, our quiet nights, our celebrations, and our heartbreaks."

In the same post, they stated that there was a Fiji song in every playlist and he was the artist that the entire household would listen to. Polynesian Music further called George the soul, who brought generations together, referring to the singer as a storyteller and a pillar of island music. They added that his voice carried the Fijian culture and emotions beyond the island. They further stated:

"Fiji inspired artists across the world. He opened doors and set a standard for what it meant to be timeless, soulful, and real. His presence was larger than life, but his spirit was always grounded in love, truth, and connection. Thank you, Fiji, for your gift. For your music, your heart, and your legacy. You gave us so much, and we will carry it with us forever. Rest in love to the GOAT. George 'Fiji' Veikoso, your song will never end."

George Fiji Veikoso began his professional singing career for a modest sum of 5 US dollars. He loved singing in the church. George won the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Male Vocalist of the Year and Favourite Entertainer of the Year in 1998. The singer thanked three of his relatives for helping him reach his goals, which included his uncle, Isireli Racule. For the unversed, he had worked with Elvis Presley on Drums of the Islands. He also thanked his other uncle, jazz star, Sakiusa Bulicokocoko and Paul Stevens.

Over the years, he had won several accolades, including the People's Choice Award. He also received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album for his album, Island Warriors. Fiji also co-wrote and sang the theme song of Baywatch Season 11, Let Me Be The One, with Glen Medeiros. In 2014, he was awarded the Best Pacific International Artist Award at the Pacific Music Awards and in 2021, he won the Pacific Music Awards and Manukau Institute of Technology Lifetime Achievement Award.
