Former 'Cosby Show' Fame, Malcolm-Jamal Warner Passed Away At The Age Of 54 From Drowning

Malcolm-Jamal Warner was an American actor, musician and poet who rose to prominence with his portrayal in the 1984 sitcom, The Cosby Show. He amazed the fans with his outstanding performance as 'Theodore Huxtable', earning him a nomination for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. However, it wasn't the actor's performance that brought him to the limelight this time; it was his unfortunate and untimely farewell from the world.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner passed away at the age of 54

Malcolm-Jamal Waner was in Costa Rica when the incident took place. The actor was on a beach on July 20, 2025, when he drowned off the coast. According to ABC news, the Costa Rican National Police revealed that the official cause of Malcolm's death was asphyxia. For the unversed, asphyxia is a condition where the body doesn't get enough oxygen to function properly.

According to reports, Malcolm-Jamal Warner died near a beach in Limon, near Cocles, Costa Rica. The actor was caught up in a rip current on the afternoon of July 20, 2025. The bystanders rescued him and carried him to the shore, where he was treated. However, he was declared dead by the Costa Rican Red Cross. He was later identified by Costa Rica's national police, which described him as a tourist. The news has left the entire entertainment industry in shock and Malcolm's fans heartbroken.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner once shared how he got his role in The Cosby Show

Malcolm-Jamal Warner is still remembered and loved for his role as 'Theodore Huxtable'. During an interview with Live with Kelly and Mark in 2023, the actor opened up about how he landed the role. He revealed that the makers were looking for a 6-foot-2-inch-tall 16-year-old and were unable to find someone who met that criteria, so his agents resubmitted him for the role. He was quoted as saying:

"When my agent submitted me, they were looking for a 6-foot-2-inch 16-year-old, because it was a running joke that Mr. Cosby's son at the time was 15 and was [6 feet, 2 inches tall]. I was literally the last person they saw."

Malcolm-Jamal once again opened up about the legacy of The Cosby Show during a conversation with Bevy Smith in 2023. He shared that there was a generation of kids who went to college because of the show. He added that the impact the show had was immense and stated:
