Air India flight AI171 crashed minutes after its take-off in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. Leaving over 241 passengers and crew members and several others the victims of the fatal accident. The country had been mourning the unfortunate incident that shook the aviation department of India when, hours later, another concerning bell rang over their heads. Another Air India flight has to make a U-turn mid-air hours after its take-off.
Air India flight AI129 departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to London's Heathrow Airport on the morning of June 13, 2025, at 5:21 am (IST). However, hours into the air, the flight is now returning to Mumbai Airport. The information about the return of the flight is in accordance with the data from the flight tracking service, Flightradar24.
The flight operated by Air India is a Boeing 777 300ER twin jet aircraft. The flight had taken off from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport a minute late from its scheduled time of 5:20 am (IST) and was supposed to reach London Heathrow Airport at 10:14 (BST). However, not long ago, the flight was redirected and is now expected to return to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 10:15 am.
According to the tweet shared by Air India on their official X platform, the flight has been redirected due to the situation arising in Iran. For the unversed, Israel has allegedly attacked the nuclear station in Iran, resulting in the country closing their air space. Several flights have been cancelled or redirected for the same reason. The post by Air India read:
"Due to the emerging situation in Iran, the subsequent closure of its airspace and in view of the safety of our passengers, the following Air India flights are either being diverted or returning to their origin: AI129 – Mumbai-London Heathrow – Returning to Mumbai."
In the same note, the Air India team has expressed their regret over the inconvenience caused by the accident. The management will make the necessary accommodation for the passengers if necessary and refunds will also be offered to guests if they opt for it. This comes at a time when aviation authorities are already dealing with the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad.

The Air India flight, which was scheduled for June 12, 2025, from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick, crashed soon after it took off. The flight carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Air India, in an official statement, confirmed the news of the crash and confirmed that there was only one survivor in the incident. For the unversed, former CM of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani also fell victim to the crash. The post could be read as:
"The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital."
