The Conjuring: Last Rites ended the 'Phase One' of the 'Conjuring Universe' on September 5, 2025. The final film gave a fitting goodbye to everyone's favourite ghost-hunting duo, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. According to multiple reports, this marks the conclusion of the arc featuring real-life characters, Ed and Lorraine Warren, in the 'Conjuring Universe'. The fans of the iconic horror franchise have been filling the theatres to bid farewell to one of the most-loved onscreen pairs ever in Hollywood's history.
Michael Chaves directed The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is the ninth film in the Conjuring franchise. While the early reviews of the film are mixed, Last Rites is benefiting from the 'emotional' and 'nostalgia' angle attached to this final film of such a great franchise. Amidst the release of the film, many fans have been asking whether Last Rites has a mid- or Post-credits scene.
Well, without spoiling anything, the answer is 'Yes', but there's a catch. Michael Chaves utilised the post-credits scene to pay homage to the real-life Warrens in the form of a bittersweet epilogue, which concludes with the 'Conjuring Mirror'. Thus, make sure you stick around until the very end so you don't miss what Chaves has in store for you.
The portrayal of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren in the Conjuring movies is not entirely accurate. Discussion on social media quickly followed the film. From Reddit threads, social media videos, and blog posts, there is debate about whether the on-screen portrait of Ed and Lorraine Warren is a false portrayal of the couple's married life. More concretely, it was in December 2017, when The Hollywood Reporter published a story based on discovery documents from litigation that disclosed some ground-breaking accusations about the Warrens’ private life. Whether these allegations will ever change the way audiences view the Conjuring films is still up for debate.
However, in the age of the internet, such controversies are a boon for content creators and YouTubers, providing mass engagement. As a result, numerous videos on YouTube feature renowned creators who mention that Lorraine always wished her marriage to Ed in real life would've been just like it's shown in the film. Now, without further ado, let's talk about the allegations, controversies, and abuse.

In legal documents made public during litigation and first reported by The Hollywood Reporter in 2017, a woman named Judith Penney stated in a sworn declaration that she had lived with the Warrens for 40 years. During the same litigation, she alleged a sexual relationship with Ed Warren that she says began when she was just a high-school teenager. These are Penney’s accusations recorded in civil discovery, and they were reported in prominent outlets but were not tested in criminal court.
Judith Penney shockingly alleged that Lorraine Warren was aware of her affair with Ed Warren. While all three of them were living together, as per Judith, Ed used to call her the "love of his life". On the other side, in public, Ed and Lorraine Warren introduced Judith as a poor local girl whom they adopted and referred to as "Warren's niece". According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, before becoming a renowned paranormal investigator, Ed worked as a city bus driver in the early 1960s. During his time as a bus driver in Monroe, Connecticut, he crossed paths with a 15-year-old high school girl named Judith Penney, who was a student at Central High School. Penny used to travel in the same bus that Ed rode, and it was how they started their alleged "amorous relationship".
Further in her list of shocking allegations, Judith Penney went on to mention in the court files that in her 30s, she got pregnant with Ed Warren's child. Not only this, she also added that Ed's wife, Lorraine Warren, allegedly persuaded him to have an abortion to save their public image and everything that they've built. In an emotional and tearful recording obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Penny could be heard saying:
"They wanted me to tell everyone that someone had come into my apartment and raped me, and I wouldn't do that. I was so scared. I didn't know what to do, but I had an abortion. The night they picked me up from the hospital after having it, they went out and lectured and left me alone."
Another massive accusation in Judith Penney's declaration was that Ed Warren was an abusive person who had reportedly beaten his wife, Lorraine Warren. Penny shared that one time Ed allegedly backhanded his wife so hard that she lost consciousness. Penny, in the same recording, said, "Some nights I thought they were going to kill each other." According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Lorraine Warren allegedly had a deal with New Line, in which she reportedly instructed them not to portray any controversy or negative accusations about her and Ed in the Conjuring movies. All these severe accusations from Penny's side couldn't take Ed and Lorraine Warren to court because of the big movie marketers, who are cashing in on the Conjuring movies.
The Hollywood Reporter mentioned in one of their pieces that former founding President and CEO of Archie Comics film and television division, Tony DeRosa-Grund, openly criticised Ed as a sexual predator and a pedophile. Tony also added that he was supported by his wife, Lorraine, as she let him sexually exploit Judith Penney for almost 40 years. On the flip side, the Conjuring franchise has grossed over 2.3 billion USD, courtesy of the sweet and ideal couple of Ed and Lorraine (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) dancing to Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling in Love. Due to a lack of legal evidence in Judith Penny's legal documents, many public commentators and industry figures have claimed that Judith Penney was manipulated by Ed and Lorraine's competitors to undermine their fame and success.
What are your thoughts on all these severe allegations made by Judith Penney on Ed and Lorraine Warren? Let us know.
