Dulquer Salmaan is one of the most popular actors in the Malayalam film industry. The actor was born to Malayalam superstar, Mammotty. He gave the film industry many hit movies, including Bangalore Days, O Kadhal Kanmani, Mahanati, and Sita Ramam. But do you know that the actor was the first choice in Mani Ratnam’s gangster action drama, Thug Life? Yes, you read that right. Dulquer was the initial choice for Thug Life, but the star kid rejected the offer. Now, after the movie’s release, fans are praising his decision to exit Thug Life, who once trolled him for the same.
Soon after the release of Kamal Haasan starrer, Thug Life, on June 5, 2025, Dulquer Salmaan’s fans started complimenting the actor for his decision to exit Mani Ratnam’s gangster action drama. Praising the actor, one fan wrote, "After the trailer, everyone trolled him for his decision. Now after watching the movie, everyone is celebrating his decision." Calling the actor’s exit from Thug Life a great decision, one user wrote, "Turning down the role in Thug Life was one of the GREATEST decisions Dulquer Salmaan ever made!" Another ardent fan wrote, "Dulquer Salmaan, The Man of Intellectuality and fortune. Great escape from #ThugLife. Thank you Bro." Lauding Dulquer’s decision and being choosy about picking up the best scripts for his films, one user wrote, "If Script Selection is an Art Dulquer Salmaan is Picasso on it .."
Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, failed to impress the audience. In fact, the reviews clearly state that the duo couldn’t reach the expectations of the audience, who wished to see a hit film like Nayakan. For the unversed, the duo worked together previously in 1987 Nayakan which has been a cult classic. Currently, the IMDb rating of Thug Life is 4.5 stars out of 10, whereas the critic’s rating in The Times Of India is 2 stars out of 5.
Movie buffs, after watching the first day, the first show of Thug Life, rushed to their X handles (formerly Twitter) to share their reviews. Many Nayakan fans were quite disappointed with the film, sharing a review, one user wrote,"Failed attempts, screenplay is too vague, Nayakan can happen only once. This is such a below-par work from both #KamalHaasan and #ManiRatnam, what the hell is Trisha’s role, man, worst." Another user shared a similar kind of disappointment and also seemed like a Nayakan fan. The fan wrote, "Mani Ratnam has not delivered even 10% of what he achieved in Nayakan. The storyline is predictable, the pacing is slow, and the performances feel flat. Despite having big actors, he did not deliver a sure-shot blockbuster, which is surely disappointing."

Amid these kinds of reviews, a few users gave mixed reactions. Sharing a mixed reaction, one user wrote, "#ThugLife had potential but ends up dragging. Kamal Haasan delivers a solid performance, but his never-ending monologues wear you down. Simbu handles his part well, but even that can’t rescue the sluggish, flat second half. The trademark Mani Ratnam spark? Nowhere to be found."
