Diljit Dosanjh has been leading the headlines for his upcoming movie, Sardaar Ji 3. For the unversed, Sardaar Ji 3 will feature Hania Aamir in a lead role, which didn't go well with the viewers following the horrific t**ror attack in Pahalgam back in April 2025. After the same, Pakistani actresses and actors were banned in India, but the way Diljit's movie announced to feature Hania, it left people shocked. Amid this, Dilji sat for an interview, wherein he talked about his much-loved Maharaja-coded look for his Met Gala debut this year.
Diljit Dosanjh recently sat for an interview with BBC Asian Network, wherein he talked about his look at the Met Gala 2025. During the conversation, he was asked about the necklace that he chose to wear during his red carpet moment. To this, the singer-actor revealed that he has always known that whenever he would want to go to the Met Gala, he would want to look like a Raja. Earlier, reports claimed that Cartier had denied Diljit's permission to borrow the famous Patiala necklace for his debut, for which he had to order a replica and wear the same.
Addressing the buzz, Diljit said that he went to Cartier's showroom and asked them if he could get the Patiala necklace, and they said yes. However, the brand later didn't give it to Diljit, stating that the necklace was on exhibition somewhere else, which is why the actor had to wear a replica. Diljit mentioned that the necklace belonged to Punjab, but the brand has stolen it. Diljit can be quoted as saying:
“I knew instantly that when I go (to the Met Gala) I want to look like a raja. When I went to the Cartier showroom last time, I asked them if they’d give me the Maharaja of Patiala’s necklace. It was ours, they stole it. There are more necklaces that they’ve taken and aren’t giving back. They promised they’d give it to me, but I was later told that it was at some exhibition somewhere. So we had a replica made.”
In the same interview, Diljit Dosanjh mentioned that when he was sitting in his vanity van, it was his idea to wear a cape with Punjab's map on it, and Gurmukhi written on it, as he wanted to give honour to his Punjabi culture. The singer-actor further stated that he teared up when he first had the vision of himself in the attire. He could be quoted as saying:
“I was sitting in my vanity van when I first had the idea of wearing a cape with the map of Punjab on it, and Gurmukhi written on it. I cried. I cried when I first had the vision. I wanted to honour my Punjabi culture.”
Diljit also shared that him going to the Met Gala wasn't a big deal but him presenting Punjab there surely was huge. He also stated that he wanted to make a huge statement while being on the red carpet, as the Punjabi language is ancient. He also addressed how there was a fresh story of Punjab in the disguise of Diljit going to the Met Gala. He said that he had nothing to say as he was just doing his job, and he didn't want to make people think that he was doing something for Punjab, but he did it from the heart.

The Patiala necklace belonged to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, and it was crafted by Cartier in 1928. It has been one of the iconic jewels of history. It had 2930 diamonds, including the world’s seventh largest diamond, De Beers, in its centre, 7 other large diamonds, Burmese rubies, and over 2,900 smaller diamonds. As per the reports, back in that time, it had a cost of Rs. 10 crore. After the death of the aharaj, the necklace was passed on to his son, but during India's independence, it was lost. It re-surfaced later, but in broken pieces. However, Cartier later recrafted the piece with replica pieces.
