Detective Sherdil Review: Diljit Dosanjh Acts As A 'Detective' To Solve Semi-Engaging Murder Mystery

Detective Sherdil was released on June 12, 2025, on ZEE5. The film features a stellar cast including Diljit Doshanj, who played the role of a 'detective'. Apart from him, Detective Sherdil marks the presence of Boman Irani, Banita Shandhu, Diana Penty, Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet Vyas and a cameo from Chunky Panday. The movie is a mystery-comedy thriller, and bagged both praise and criticism, the latter being more intense. The star cast showcased their acting mettle throughout the film, but it remained semi-engaging, with the plot being loosely constructed.

Diljit Doshanj's Detective Sherdil's review: Fun-mystery had potential, but ended up being semi-engaging

Detective Sherdil revolves around the murder-mystery of 'Arvind Mehta', a wealthy industrialist. 'Arvind Mehta' was found dead in his mansion, which his daughter suspected was a murder. On top of that, the businessman, who died reportedly, left his fortune to his daughter's beau and the family dog. The investigation was given to the investigator, Diljit Doshanj, who, in general, is famous in the area for his goofy nature and luxury fashion. The plot is set in the background of Budapest, and as soon as the investigation began, it felt lighter, but eventually, it ended up bringing layers of an onion.

The movie revolves around a fun mystery, and the plot actually had the potential to grab the attention. Well, the viewers have pointed out that it needed to slow down to build the tension within by letting the scenes settle. What Detective Sherdil did was that it directed the audience to the chaos so much that the main focus about finding out about the killer remained foggy.

As Diljit's character got the rare serious case, his investigation included several portions such as financial fraud in 'Arvind Mehta's company, his daughter being cut off from the will, his son's affair with a maid, and his wife hiding his medical documents. When the clues indicated someone to be the killer, another twist came, revealing the real murderer, and this is how the layers unfolded. Well, the back-to-back twists in the movie left the audience somewhat confused, leading the plot to be semi-engaging even when it seemingly had the potential.

Diljit Doshanj's Detective Sherdil's cast and performance

Each of the actors played an important role in the movie. While Diljit actually did well, the audience pointed out some lags in his comic timing, his reactions, and even his dialogues, which felt over-exaggerated. In a word, while his fans are in awe of his skills, for this film, they seemed to have remained a bit disappointed, which led the critics to give a rather low rating to the film.

Talking about Diana Penty, she played the role of Diljit's assistant, and her boss lady charm was one of the striking factors in the movie. Arjun Tanwar was a surprise package in the movie, which grabbed the attention, while Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Banita Sandhu did proper justice to their respective roles. Talking about Chunky Panday's cameo, he provided the comic relief, which brought a humorous touch and unexpected involvement to the film. So, the critics have pointed out that if not the film's script was thin, the mystery was okayish, and the comedy seemed too forced, then it could have made a spot.
