Failed Marriages Of Dermot Mulroney, Divorced 1st Wife After 17 Years And 2nd Wife After 15 Years

Popular Hollywood actor and musician, Dermot Mulroney, is a familiar face in many American films and TV series. He is also a very talented Cello player who has lended his tunes to films like Jurassic World, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Inside Out and more. Recently, the 61-year-old actor grabbed headlines after he filed for divorce from his wife of 15 years, Prima Apollinaare. What is even more shocking is that Dermot had previously been married to Catherine Keener for 17 years, and had also been the one to file for divorce papers in his first marriage. Strangely, the reason cited for both these separations is the same. 

Dermot Mulroney's first marriage to Catherine Keener

Dermot Mulroney and Catherine Keener had first met in 1986 on the sets of their first film together, Survival Quest. The couple got married in 1990 and then welcomed a son named Clyde Keener Mulroney after nine years of marriage. Following in his parents' footsteps, Clyde also worked on sets as a scriptwriter and filmmaker. However, in 2005, the couple separated. Two years later, in 2007, Dermot filed for divorce from Catherine, after 17 years of marriage. The reason cited for the divorce was 'irreconcilable differences.' Both of them also have joint custody of their son. A media portal, Extra, had retrieved court documents that reportedly said:

"There are irreconcilable differences between the parties that have led to the irredeemable breakdown of the marriage, and there is no possibility of saving the marriage, through counseling or other means."

After the divorce, Catherine Keener has not yet remarried. The actress has also kept her personal life very private and away from prying eyes since there are no reports or even rumours about any other romantic relationships after her divorce from Dermot. However, Catherine is known to be very close to actress Jennifer Aniston of F.R.I.E.N.D.S fame. Apart from that, she has also been nominated for the Oscars twice and once for the Golden Globe award for her phenomenal acting prowess. 

Dermot Mulroney's second marriage to Prima Apollinaare

Dermot Mulroney met his second wife, Tharita Cesaroni, in 2008. She later changed her name to Prima Apollinaare. The couple welcomed their first baby girl, Mabel, after a few months of dating. Shortly after that, they welcomed their second daughter, Sally. In 2010, Dermot and Prima finally tied the knot after nearly three years of dating. Reportedly, the couple was connected through their shared passion for music. Dermot was a professional cellist, while Prima was an Italian musician who later shifted to the USA. The couple, along with their daughters, used to live in Los Angeles. 

In 2024, Prima and Dermot made their appearance in the game show, We Are Family. Both musicians gave a performance and played a duet song. Dermot expressed to Entertainment Weekly how fun he had performing on the game show with his wife. He also made a joke that maybe the game show makers thought they were a secret couple and approached them to perform together; however, they have been together for 20 years. Dermot said in the interview:

“They knew Prima’s music and put together that we are this sort of secret couple even though we’ve been together for 20 years. Kind of a stealth Hollywood couple. So it really works perfectly for this show. And then it was such an honor to be on a game show that helps other people and isn’t just fun and games, although we could not have had more fun.”

Dermot Mulroney filed for divorce from Prima Apollinaare

Nearly just a year after their appearance on the We Are Family gameshow, Dermot filed for divorce from Prima, his wife of 15 years, reported People Magazine. As per reports, the actor asked for spousal support and requested the court not to give the same to Prima. However, other sources claim that their divorce is an amicable one and neither of them has asked for spousal support. They will also be holding joint custody of their daughters. Entertainment Weekly stated that they are not arguing for money or custody. They also reportedly used mediators and not lawyers to file for separation. A source said to the publication:

"No one is asking for anything, and no one is denying anything. They are not arguing over the children nor money. They used mediators, not lawyers, as they are friends and this is amicable. They were advised to file this way which seems to have caused media confusion."

The reason cited by Dermot for his second divorce is the same as the one he stated for his first one, which is 'irreconcilable differences'. Interestingly, the actor had filed for his first divorce in June 2007; meanwhile, he allegedly filed for his second divorce in June 2025. In a matter of 18 years, Dermot has filed two divorces, coincidentally in the same month.
