Veteran Marathi actress Daya Dongre passed away at the age of 85 due to age-related health issues. The departed actress made a name for herself in the hearts of the Marathi-speaking audience through many iconic roles. Whether in theatre, TV, or cinema, Daya had conquered all forms of entertainment and was also a skilled dancer and singer.  Here's everything you need to know about Daya Dongre, who has left behind an unforgettable legacy. 

Daya Dongre's early life and family

Daya Dongre was born on March 11, 1940, in Amravati, according to Moneycontrol. Her love for the stage started when she was a child growing up in a family connected to the acting world. Her mother, Yamunatai Modak, was an actress, while her aunt, Shanta Modak, was an actress and singer. Following in her aunt's footsteps, Daya had shown a love for music. She had even won a singing competition organised by the All India Radio, as per the same report. 

Daya Dongre was initially a singer who started acting in theatre 

Daya Dongre began training in classical dance and music at a young age, according to Lokmat Times. However, she found her calling as an actress while studying at Fergusson College, Pune. Daya began participating in one-act play competitions and in Purushottam Karandak, the highly acclaimed annual play competition. From there, she was determined to pursue acting as a career. To achieve this dream, Daya attended the National School of Drama in Delhi to train in acting. In her quest to become an actress, Daya let go of her initial ambitions of becoming a singer, and despite having melodious talents, she focused on acting more in the future. 

Daya Dongre's husband, Sharad Dongre, supported her dreams of becoming an actress

While enrolled in NSD, Daya tied the knot to Sharad Dongre and took on the role of a wife and mother. However, this did not hinder her path towards the acting world. Instead, Sharad lent his unwavering support to his wife and uplifted her ambitions. With her husband's support, Daya was able to push herself further in her journey towards success and establish a name in the Marathi entertainment industry. 

Daya Dongre's work front and acting legacy

Daya Dongre will always be remembered for her iconic villainous roles, mostly as a taunting mother-in-law with cutting words. The Doordarshan serial, Gajara, was the initial push that she needed to make her name in the industry. Through this series, she became a well-known face. Her popular Marathi movies include, Char Divas Sasuche, Lalchi, Navri Mile Navryala, Khatyal Sasu Nathal Soon, among more. She also appeared in many Marathi serials and a few Hindi movies such as, Daulat ki Jung, Aashray, Naamcheen, and more.

According to several reports, she passed away at the age of 85 due to age-related issues; however, the exact cause of death has not been revealed yet.
