Costao Farnandes: Real-Life Hero Whom Nawazuddin Siddiqui Essayed In ZEE5 Original Film, 'Costao'

ZEE5 original film, Costao has been leading the headlines. The film, directed by Sejal Shah, is based on the real-life events of Goa-based Customs officer, Costao Fernandes. The role of Costao Fernandes is played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the movie, and without any doubt, he did proper justice to the role. While people are in awe of Nawazuddin's acting skills, let us know about the real-life Customs officer, Costao Fernandes, who took down Goa's biggest smuggler, that too, all by himself.

Costao Fernandes was born on April 26, 1942, in Cabinda. He is an Angolan politician and also serves as Angola's ambassador to Egypt, India, and the United Kingdom. It was in 1979 when Costao Fernandes joined Goa-customs as a Preventive Officer. Costao Fernandes is known for his bravery and it was in 1996 that he was awarded the President's Medal for the same. Well, the reason is that it was back in 1991, when Costao Fernandes prevented gold smuggling worth Rs. 8 crores by risking his life.

The real-life story of Costao: Cosato Fernandes' bravery in the way he took down a smuggler from a politician's family all alone

After he joined the Goa-customs, it was in 1991 when Costao Fernandes received information about a huge amount of gold being smuggled in. Costao Fernandes got to know that the smuggling was being done at Goa's dislocated Fartade beach. After the same, Costao decided to take action, that too, single-handedly. The case involved the Alemao family of Goa, who were prominent figures in Goa politics back in the 1990s. Churchill Alemao, one of the Alemao brothers, began his journey as a tea boy and ended up being the CM of Goa, and he had influence there back in those times. However, the gold smuggling case involved him, his brothers, including the late Alvarnez Alemao, and one of his employees and associates as well.

It was in May 1991 when, in the darkness of night, Costao Fernandes headed to run an investigation at the Fartade beach, all alone. Till the next day morning, he kept an eye there but returned later, thinking no one would run smuggling work in the board daylight. However, he was proved wrong, as around 10 a.m., he got a call, wherein he was informed that some suspicious work was going on in Carmona Beach. He reached there by his motorcycle and witnessed Ciabro Alemao there along with two cars.

The cars were being loaded with battery-type boxes. One of the cars was being driven by Alvarnez Alemao. When the car reached Verca village, Costao Fernandes jumped near it and asked him to stop. Alvarnez Alemao didn't oblige to it, and attacked Costao with a knife. During the fight, in self-defence, Costao struck back, and Alvarnez sustained deep wounds, and later he died. For the same, a murder charge was filed against Costao Fernandes. Coming back to what happened next, Costao managed to open one of the boxes that were being carried in the car and found gold bars. There were several witnesses as well but no one helped, which led Costao to return back.

After this incident, Costao Fernandes would get death threats, but amid this situation, he still managed to put a case against the smugglers, and they were detained under COFEPOSA. During the investigations, the witnesses from the scene that happened in Verca village denied seeing anything suspicious except the fight, and it led CBI to charge a murder case against Costao Fernandes. CBI stated that the gold smuggling case was fake. However, the Customs Commissioners believed in Costao and imposed heavy penalties on Churchill and his associates in this case. The Costao murder case was then shifted to the Supreme Court, and justice was served to the braveheart through a clean chit after 23 years.

In his personal life, Costao is married to Maria, and the couple is parents to three kids.
