Another 'The Conjuring' Prequel In The Works After 'Last Rites' Success? Here Is Everything We Know

The Conjuring: Last Rites has been a massive success at the box office. However, it was not the farewell fans had anticipated from their favourite horror franchise. The Michael Chaves directorial venture is breaking records and has surpassed the USD 110 million mark in less than five days, with a revenue of over Rs. 55 crore in India alone. The film was released on September 5, 2025. However, the fans were intrigued whether this would be the end of the series. Well, there is some exciting news for fans, as a new report suggests that another prequel in the hit series is already in the works.

The Conuring prequel is already in the works

According to Puck News, Warner Bros. are currently planning another prequel to The Conjuring franchise. The unnamed project is reportedly set in the same universe as The Nun and Annabelle. However, unfortunately, filmmaker James Wan, who helmed the original two Conjuring films, will not be returning to the franchise. 

According to reports, James Wan remained with the franchise as a producer; however, as he is reportedly involved in a settlement dispute with Warner Bros., his return seems unlikely. If the reports are to be believed, James wanted to be paid more as a producer on the films, but the studio remained firm about their decision. As a result, James will likely leave the cinematic universe entirely. Nonetheless, an official confirmation from the makers regarding the sequel is still awaited.

The Conjuring to be made into a series

With the rising trend of long-format shows, The Conuring is also being made into a series. The project has been underway since 2023. According to an earlier report by Deadline, HBO Max was working on a drama series based on The Conjuring franchise with Warner Bros. Television. It was described as a continuation of the story introduced in the films. However, the official streaming date of The Conjuring Series is yet to be announced.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is the final instalment in The Conjuring franchise following The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The film has become the biggest horror opener of all time, with a global box office collection of over USD 194 million, according to Deadline. The film has even surpassed the record set by 2017's horror film, It. The Conjuring: Last Rites brings back Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson as Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren.

Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy join them as the leads. The Conjuring: Last Rites follows the story of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate the Smurl family haunting in 1986, which turns out to be one of their most challenging and disturbing cases, tied to a possessed mirror that has a history with the Warrens and leads to their final confrontation with a powerful demon. The film also explores the Warren family's personal life, showing their daughter's upbringing and the challenges they face in dealing with the haunting.
