28 Years Later: The Bone Temple recently unveiled its first look teaser, giving fans a glimpse of how the plot of the upcoming release will take on from its first part, which was released in June 2025. The trailer heightened interest in the movie franchise, as viewers revisited clips from the first part. It revived the popular fan theory that Cillian Murphy would appear briefly in the movie, playing a zombie. Recently, the Oppenheimer fame clarified the rumours, citing that his role will have a significant impact on the third part of 28 Years Later.
Cillian Murphy is known to be chronically offline and unaware of social media trends, as well as online discussions about him. Murphy, who is credited as executive producer of 28 Years Later, shared his humorous reaction to online speculation that he played a gaunt zombie in the 2025 film during a recent interview with The Observer. People also connected it to the actor's 28 Days Later's character, 'Jim', and thought it was the same character's zombified version.
Cillian Murphy shared that his son informed him of the speculations, and he found it 'flattering'. His reaction indicated that the fan theory was unexpected for him; however, he took it in a light-hearted manner. Although Murphy wasn't in the first part, he confirmed his presence in the sequel. Regarding being mistaken for the character played by Angus Neill, an art dealer and model, Murphy said:
"That's great people think I look like a zombie cadaver [in 28 Years Later]. It's very flattering."
Cillian Murphy revealed that he appeared in 8 Years Later: The Bone Temple only 'a little bit' at the end. The film directed by Nia DaCosta is set for release on January 16, 2026. Regarding Murphy's role in the movie, the actor has dropped a major update. He revealed that he will be reprising his role as 'Jim' from the 2002 hit, 28 Days Later. However, he will only appear in a brief scene. But the character is intended to set up a larger, 'significant role' in the trilogy's third and final instalment.
In 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, besides the Murphy cameo, fans can look forward to the return of the pivotal cast from the first part, including Jack O'Connell as 'Sir Jimmy Crystal', Alfie Williams as 'Spike', and Ralph Fiennes as 'Dr Kelson'. Murphy revealed that the first and second parts were shot back-to-back in order to capitalise on actor availability. As for the final instalment of the trilogy, Murphy revealed that its production depends on the box office performance of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The actor emphasised this by encouraging audiences to go to the theatres and watch it.
