Bryant Gumbel, a former show host, was rushed to a hospital in New York City on Monday, October 19, 2025. At around 9 p.m., the Today show legend was taken from his Manhattan apartment to a hospital, according to reports. On being asked by TMZ about his current condition, a family member reportedly said that he is 'OK.' It's not known what exactly happened to the former Today show host. Gumbel is reportedly still in the hospital recovering from his condition.
Yes, Bryant Gumbel has previously faced significant health challenges. In 2009, he opened up about his health. In his earlier decades, the former host had heavily smoked, which resulted in lung cancer in his later decades. He also admitted that he was a big smoker and used to smoke ‘three packs a day’ when he was young, and underwent an operation in which doctors removed a part of his lung. He called that an aggressive treatment. His candid disclosure earned him widespread respect for his openness about battling the disease.
Bryant Gumbel, born as Bryant Charles Gumbel, is a retired American television journalist and sportscaster. He is widely known for his long career as co-host of NBC's Today, which lasted 15 years. Born in New Orleans, he hosted HBO's acclaimed investigative series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel from 1995 to 2023. Gumbel was hired as a co-host in 1975 for the National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck. From 1975 until January 1982, he hosted numerous sporting events for NBC, including Major League Baseball, college basketball, and the National Football League. He returned to sportscasting for NBC when he hosted the prime-time coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics from Seoul and the PGA Tour in 1990.
NBC News made Gumbel the principal anchor of Today beginning September 27, 1982, and broadcast from Vietnam, Vatican City, Europe, South America, and much of the United States. His work on the show Today earned him many prestigious awards and a massive fanbase. He is the third-longest serving co-host of Today, after former hosts Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. He left the show on January 3, 1997, after 15 years. Gumbel moved to CBS, where he hosted various shows before becoming co-host of the network's morning show, The Early Show. Gumbel left CBS and The Early Show on May 17, 2002.

He was best known for his work in various assignments for CBS Sports, including the National Football League and NCAA basketball. Greg Gumbel is one of a few sports announcers to have worked on pre-game, play-by-play, and Radio Super Bowl broadcast teams. He passed away in December 2024 at the age of 78 after battling pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease.
