Boxing Legend, Mary Kom Opens Up About Painful Divorce From Onler, 'I Have Been Left Broken...'

Boxing legend, Mary Kom has often made headlines with her strong performances inside the ring. However, earlier, in 2025, Mary grabbed a lot of attention for her personal life. For the unversed, Mary was married to the love of her life, Onler. However, their relationship hit a rough patch, and they got divorced after 18 years of marriage. In 2025, the boxing legend confirmed that she and Onler were parting ways. In a recent interview, Mary opened up about her painful divorce.

Mary Kom reveals how things changed between her and Onler post her injury before the 2022 Commonwealth Games

In a recent interview with PTI, Mary Kom revealed what went wrong in her marriage to Onler. She shared that everything was fine when she was competing and had very little involvement in finances. However, after her career-ending injury that occurred just before the 2022 Commonwealth Games, things changed. During that tough phase, Mary realised that she was living a lie and the man she had trusted was not who she believed him to be. She highlighted that several attempts were made to resolve the matters between her and Onler, but nothing changed, and thus she sought a divorce. She was quoted as saying:

"Things were fine till I was competing and had very little involvement in my finances, but when I got injured before the 2022 Commonwealth Games, I realised I was living a lie. I was bedridden for several months and needed a walker after that. It was then that I realised that the man I had trusted was not what I believed him to be. I did not want it to be a spectacle for the world, so I sought a divorce after several attempts to resolve it between us. He transferred my properties to his name, took crores in loans, and mortgaged my land."

Mary Kom explained why she kept her divorce private for two years

In the same interview, Mary Kom shared that when she informed her and Onler’s family about breaking their marriage, they understood. The boxing legend mentioned that she hoped to keep the matter private, but in 2025, a concerted attempt was made to spoil her image. People called her 'greedy one' and many new reports made her a 'villain'. She was quoted as saying:

"I informed my family and his family that it cannot continue, and they understood. I was hoping that it would stay private, but then a concerted attempt has been made to slander me for the last year. I thought I would not respond, but then my silence was being misread, and the attacks kept increasing. There are news reports that call me the greedy one. Things that were only discussed between me and him are being fed to tabloids to paint me as the villain, and my character is being questioned. I had to react at some point."

Mary Kom shares that she wants to focus on her parents and four children

Further in the interview, Mary Kom shared that after her separation, she was left heartbroken but couldn’t grieve over the following, as they have four kids to take care of. She mentioned that her parents are also dependent on her, thus she wants to focus on her kids and parents, and stay away from everything negative. She was quoted as saying:

"What is the point of my achievements? Kya fayda, I have been left broken, but I can't even afford to grieve. Because I have four kids to take care of, parents who are dependent on me ... I haven't and don't wish to take any police action but just leave me alone, stop slandering me."
