Bharti Singh needs no introduction as she carved a name for herself without any Godfather. In an industry where stand-up comedy is categorised as a male-dominated world, she stood out. Bharti has often talked about her difficult childhood due to poverty and shared how she changed her destiny with her hard work.
In a recent appearance on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Bharti got candid about her life and birth story. She revealed that their family faced a lot of financial difficulties and struggled to make ends meet. Bharti also revealed that since her parents had two kids already, they didn’t want to have a third child. So when Bharti’s mom got to know that she was pregnant with her, she tried to get it aborted.
Going further in the conversation, Bharti revealed that since getting a child aborted medically required a lot of money, her mother tried natural ways. From eating herbs to physically tiring her, Bharti’s mother tried everything. In her words:
“Phir meri mummy ne itni saari jadibutiyaan baba logon se milke khaayi, paer ke bal baith ke poche maare, garam cheez-papita, khajur-kha liya ki yeh rahe na. But I had to come. My mother gave birth to me on her own. She was alone at home, and my father had a night duty.
Going through the emotional story of her birth, Bharti recalled how her delivery cost her mother only Rs. 60. She revealed her mother managed delivering Bharti on her own and called a midwife to cut the cord, whom she gave Rs. 60. The standup-comedian later gifted her mother a house worth Rs. 1.60 crore. Talking about the same, she said:
“She gave birth to me alone, just called a dai to cut the cord, who took Rs 60. Main Rs 60 main hui hoon. Main Rs 60 ka bachcha hoon. Aur aaj dekha maine mummy ko Rs 1.60 crore ka ghar le kar diya hai.”
Bharti’s father was the only earning member in her family, while her mother was a housewife. However, when Bharti’s father passed away, the entire responsibility of Bharti and her siblings fell on her mother. She worked in factories, cleaned toilets, and worked as a maid, experiencing all types of hardships. In an interview with Neena Gupta for Brut India, Bharti revealed that her mother would feed them with leftover food given to her from the houses she worked in.
