'Anupamaa' Actress, Adrija Roy On Male Actors Paid More Than Female Leads, 'Women Work Equally Hard'

Anupamaa was released in July 2020, and starred Rupali Ganguly in the titular role. Crossing through the challenges thrown by society and standing her ground in tough situations, the character of 'Anupamaa' has won hearts among the people and consistently ranks among the top five in TRP (Television Rating Point). Apart from the titular role, now many other female characters and their struggles have also gained prominence in the show. One such character is that of Adrija Roy, who plays 'Raahi' in the show. Recently, the actress addressed the pay disparity between male actors and female leads that exists in the TV industry. 

Adrija Roy shared her views on the pay gap between male actors and female leads

Adrija Roy sat for an interview with Pinkvilla and shared her thoughts on the pay gap which exists in the entertainment industry. The actress revealed that male actors get paid more than female protagonists in shows. Adrija expressed that it was disheartening that, in 2025, people still need to discuss the pay disparity. The Anupamaa actress stated that women work equally hard, and sometimes even harder, since their roles are more intense and emotionally taxing. In the interview, Adrija was quoted as saying:

"It's disheartening that in 2025, we still need to talk about this. I do feel women work equally hard, sometimes even more, considering how emotionally intense many of our roles are."

Adrija also highlighted the significance of being vocal about one's rights. The actress said that it's not very easy to achieve equal rights in the industry. However, she also emphasised that it is important to 'speak up and push for what we deserve'. Adrija said:

"It's not always easy, but I think it's important we speak up and push for what we deserve."

In the show, Anupamaa, Adrija plays the role of 'Raahi', who is 'Anupamaa' and 'Anuj's adopted daughter. Initially, this character was played by Alisha Parveen, but then Adrija joined the star cast after the former quit from the show. Adrija has gained a lot of popularity for her powerful portrayal of 'Raahi' and has also won hearts with her on-screen chemistry with co-star, Shivam Khajuria who plays the role of 'Prem'. In fact, the love story and wedding track between 'Raahi' and 'Prem' became quite well-loved and had fans glued to their TV screens. 

Before entering the Hindi TV industry, Adrija was a well-known Bengali actress who established her name through numerous popular Bengali serials. In 2023, she made her Hindi serial debut with the show, Durga Aur Charu, which failed to make a mark among the audience. Adrija was also part of two more top-ranked serials, Imlie and Kundali Bhagya. Finally, in 2024, she joined the cast of Anupamaa as 'Raahi' and has become a favourite among the fans. However, with more new cast taking over the original storyline of Anupamaa, the show has failed to reach the number one spot, which it used to occupy.
