Chinni Prakash Recalls Amitabh Bachchan Rejected 'Jumma Chumma's' Hookstep, Reveals Jaya's Reaction

Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most loved and celebrated actors in Bollywood. He is not just known for his powerful acting but also for his grounded personality. Over the years, 'Big B' has given several iconic Bollywood films, some of which are still cherished by fans. One of those iconic hits is his song, Jumma Chumma. But do you know that Amitabh Bachchan once almost rejected the hook step? Well, the choreographer of the song recently revealed the story behind it. 

Amitabh Bachchan felt the hookstep of Jumma Chumma won’t look good on him

Recently, the choreographer of Jumma Chumma, Chinni Prakash sat down for a candid conversation with Friday Talkies and revealed the untold story behind the making of this iconic song. He shared that at 12 in the night, his assistants called him and asked him to show the Paa actor, Amitabh Bachchan the hookstep as they were scared. He shared:

"I got a call from my assistant at 12 in the night… both of my assistants refused to show the hook step to Amitabh Bachchan and told me to do it. ‘We can’t show him. We are scared,’ they told me."

Chinni Prakash continued to mention that when he performed the whole song in front of Amitabh Bachchan, the legendary actor looked very hesitant to do it and asked for three months to learn and practice it. Later, the Pink actor had told the choreographer that the step won’t look good on him, but Chinni begged him to do it. Chinni Prakash was quoted as saying:

"While doing the hook step, he told me, ‘You are a 5 feet man and it looks good on you, but I am 6 feet plus, and it won’t look good on me.’ But I begged him to do the hook step."

Chinni Prakash revealed Jaya Bachchan’s reaction to the hookstep

In the same interview with Friday Talkies, choreographer, Chinni Prakash continued to reveal the reaction of Amitabh’s wife, Jaya Bachchan. He shared that when the film was screened, there was pin-drop silence during the song, but as soon as it ended, the audience started to cheer as loud as they could. What was more interesting was that even Jaya Bachchan appreciated the hook step. In his words:

"Everyone was there, and during the six-minute song, there was pin-drop silence, but after the song got over, there was a big shout in the theatre. Never in the history of Amitabh Bachchan has there been a song shot like this. Jaya ji told me, It is looking superb."

The iconic song, Jumma Chumma De De is from the film, Hum, directed by Mukul S. Anand and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Govinda and Kimi Katkar. The film was a major hit and became the second-highest grossing Indian movie of 1991. One of the major reasons for the hit was the song, Jumma Chumma, which was written by Anand Bakshi and sung by Sudesh Bhosle and Kavita Krishnamurthy.

Over the years, the song has been used at multiple places, including a scene in the film, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.
