Amitabh Bachchan Revealed What Abhishek Went Through After His Wedding With Karisma Was Called Off

Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor were once the most loved couple in the Bollywood circuit. The duo met at his sister, Shweta Bachchan’s, wedding with Karisma’s cousin, Nikhil Nanda, and soon, sparks flew between them. Soon, the two started dating, and they managed to keep their relationship under wraps for five years.

In 2002, during Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday, when Jaya Bachchan announced the happy news of Abhishek and Karisma’s engagement, it came as a surprise to many. Jaya publicly welcomed Karisma to the Bachchan family, and it was a happy news for their fans. While everyone waited for the much-in-love couple’s wedding, both families later announced that the wedding was called off.

In 2005, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan graced Karan Johar’s celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan. In the show, Amitabh addressed the reason behind the wedding being called off and what the family went through. Speaking about the same, he stated:

“It was a sensitive moment. Relationships are being formed, relationships are being destroyed. It can be distressing for any young man, and obviously distressing for the family. We don’t wish that to happen to anyone, but if the circumstances are not conducive for a union, then it’s better that you go different ways. That’s what happened."

In the same interaction, Amitabh Bachchan revealed what the family went through and stated that whatever had happened, it was God’s will. Revealing it was a lesson for the family, Amitabh said:

“I think all these episodes in one’s life are the episodes that will improve him as a human being, make him a better man, teach him to face the world in a much stronger way. If I may be absolutely, brutally honest, it gives you an opportunity of learning in the profession we are in. ‘Mann ka ho toh acha, Mann ka naa ho toh aur zyaada acha, woh fir bhagwaan ke mann ka hota hai aur bhagwaan aapke liye, kabhi bura nahi chahega.’”

Karisma Kapoor’s mother, Babita, wanted to secure her daughter’s future

It was also rumoured that the real reason behind their sudden called-off wedding was because of Karisma's mother, Babita. During that time, Karisma had already established herself as one of Bollywood's leading actresses, whereas he was nothing more than Amitabh Bachchan's son. The Bachchans, too, were undergoing huge financial losses, and to financially secure her daughter, Babita wanted a prenup to be signed, which was not accepted by Big B.

Karisma Kapoor went on to marry Sunjay Kapur after her broken engagement to Abhishek Bachchan

Within months of her engagement being called off, Babita got Karisma married to a rich Delhi-based businessman, Sunjay Kapur, in September 2003. Soon, Karisma and Sunjay’s marriage turned ugly, and they filed for a divorce. In her divorce plea, Karisma accused Sunjay of abusing her physically from the very beginning of their marriage.

After an ugly court battle for two years, in 2016, Sunjay and Karisma were granted a divorce, and the custody of their children went to the actress. On June 12, 2025, Sunjay passed away tragically after suffering a cardiac arrest.
