Leela Mishra was an actress who worked in the film industry for over five decades in over 200 films. She is best remembered for her role as 'Basanti's Mausi' in the 1975 film, Sholay. However, one of her best performances was for Naani Maa in 1981, for which she received the Best Actress award at the age of 73. Her demise left a hole in the heart of the industry. In an old interview, the filmmaker, Sai Pranjpye, reflected on Leela's dedication and revealed how she dedicated herself to the field even in her last days.
Sai Paranjpye is one of the best filmmakers in the film industry. She made a space for herself when the industry was overwhelmed by men and has since been one of the renowned names among the filmmakers. However, in an interview with Filmfare, she reflected on her experience working with the legendary actress, Leela Mishra. During her interaction, she opened up about one of the unsung gems in the industry that stood out to her.
Sai Paranjpye reflected on her experience working with Leela Mishra in the 1983 film, Katha and revealed that the late actress was extraordinary. She shared that Leela was a testament to unmatched professionalism and commitment. She added that she had never met anyone like the actress, who, despite her lack of formal education, understood filmmaking with such profound instinct. She was quoted as saying:
"She was the embodiment of punctuality and perfection. I've never come across anyone quite like her."
Sai further revealed that while working with Leela in Chashme Budoor, she noticed that the actress would instinctively add her own creative touch to a scene. From, effortlessly climbing the stairs to the boys' home to improvising in the moment with grace and ease, Leela was a true perfectionist. However, it was one particular instance that painted a moving picture of Leela's indomitable spirit for her. She recalled that she was once told that during the filming of what was her last film, Daata, Leela suffered a paralytic stroke and half her body was immobilised.
However, while the entire set was struck by confusion and began to discuss how to rush Leela Mishra back to Mumbai for treatment, the actress was unshaken. Sai added that Leela was unmoved by her condition and requested the camera crew to frame her from her unaffected side. She revealed it was only after they had finished the filming that Leela returned to Mumbai, where she passed away shortly after. Recalling what Leela said, Sai was quoted as saying:

Another striking insight into Leela Mishra's no-nonsense attitude was when it came to work compensation. Sai Paranjpye revealed that Leela was adamant about being fairly paid and always demanded her standard Rs. 1000 per day, regardless of the part and its size. Citing such an instance, Sai recalled that Leela was once approached by Satyajit Ray to act in Shatranj Ke Khilari. However, Leela didn't recognise him and asked her whether she would receive her usual fee.
According to Sai, Leela was not only a seasoned actress but also a woman with unwavering dignity, self-respect and love for her craft. Her journey showed resilience; while it was often overshadowed, it would never be forgotten.
