Twinkle Khanna Recalled Her Love Story, Said, 'I Was BORED And Akshay Was Six Feet Of...'

Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar are one of Bollywood’s most loved couples, who have been married for over two decades. Together, they have built a very strong personal and professional life. But, what is more interesting, is to know how their relationship started. It wasn’t love at first sight, or anything glamorous. It was, as Twinkle Khanna said, a 15-day fling. 

In several interviews, Twinkle Khanna opened up about their relationship and said, it was supposed to be just a 15-day fling because she was bored. But, eventually their bond grew into something more serious and long-lasting.  

Twinkle Khanna’s confession about her relationship with Akshay Kumar

Twinkle Khanna in 2016, opened up about her relationship with Akshay Kumar on the sets of the show, Koffee With Karan. She opened up about the early days of her relationship, revealing that she had not planned anything serious at first. She was coming out of a long-term relationship and felt that a short-term connection (fling) would be enough. During a film shoot in Calgary, she was completely bored and thought that spending time with Akshay would be a good distraction. On the show, when Karan Johar started this topic, Twinkle continued saying:

“I had come out of a long-term relationship, and I wanted to have a fling. There he was-six feet of chocolate ice cream. So, I decided I’m going to have a fling with him, and it was going to last 15 days because that was the outdoor (shooting duration). I ran out of books in Calgary. There was no TV and I was really bored. And there he was. So, it was kind of perfect.”

The journey from a flop movie to a marriage proposal

After the relationship story, Twinkle shared another interesting story related to their marriage and proposal. During the early days of dating, Twinkle Khanna had a film with Aamir Khan to be released, which was Mela. Akshay Kumar was not looking for a fling, he wanted commitment, so he proposed to her. She was very confident of the film and knew it would be a hit creating magic on the screen, and with that confidence she told Akshay Kumar, that if this film flops, then she will marry him. Fortunately, that is what happened, the film failed to impress the audience but whatever happened was in favour of Akshay Kumar. Soon after this film, the couple decided to get married. The couple jokingly remembered the entire incident on the show, Koffee With Karan. 

Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar’s life after marriage

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna got married on January 17, 2001, in an intimate ceremony. Over two decades later, the couple has two children, son, Aarav and daughter, Nitara. Twinkle, who was once a popular actress and had given films like Barsaat and Jaan, shifted into writing and interior design. She has authored some bestselling books such as Mrs Funnybones and Pyjamas Are Forgiving. Akshay Kumar, on the other hand, remains to be a top Bollywood actor with a successful career in diverse genres. Together, the couple built a balanced life with professional achievements and family love, while still staying grounded. Most recently, Akshay Kumar had his film, Housefull 5 released in theatres which according to June 8, 2025 has crossed Rs. 50 crores. 

Akshay Kumar’s past relationships

Akshay Kumar before settling down with Twinkle Khanna made a couple of headlines regarding his rumoured relationships. He was known for his charming personality. He was linked with several Bollywood actresses in the 90s, including Pooja Batra, Shilpa Shetty and Raveena Tandon. His most talked about affair was his and Raveen Tandon’s relationship and it was also said that they had secretly gotten engaged to each other at some point. However, things didn’t work out and the couple parted ways. After a few years, Akshay’s name was linked with Shilpa Shetty, but that too ended after a while. Eventually, he met Twinkle Khanna and what started as a fling turned into a lifelong bond. 

Twinkle Khanna handling online rumours with love and humour

Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar are known to spread fun and laughter whenever possible. In May 2025, social media was filled with rumours that Akshay Kumar and actor, Vicky Kaushal were fighting over the rights of a military film called Operation Sindoor. Twinkle, known for her witty writing, addressed the gossip in her Times of India column. She recalled confronting Akshay, only to hear him casually reply, 'It’s fake news and my leg is on fire.' Initially Twinkle felt that his reply was very weak but later it turned out to be true, Akshay had actually injured himself while shooting. In her words:

“I come across a flurry of tweets and I call the man of the house and start arguing. ‘I just read that you are fighting with Vicky Kaushal over who gets to make a movie on Operation Sindoor.’ He sighs and says, ‘It’s fake news and my leg is on fire, so I will call you later.’”
