The afternoon of June 12, 2025, brought a cloud of grief that cast the entire country in the shadow of heartbreak. A flight which was supposed to fly through the skies, bringing several home and others to their dreams, left everyone in ashes and their families in a pain they would remember for the years to come. Amid that, a revelation about AI171's pilot, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's promise to his old father has further deepened the wound on the nation's soul.
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was the pilot operating the Air India flight AI171, Boeing 787 Dreamliner when it crashed due to what was determined to be an engine malfunction, as per the early findings. While further investigation is being made and the findings are in its premature stage, the crash resulted in the demise of 241 people who were on board and several trainee doctors who were in the mess of the medical college hostel the flight crashed on. As the stories and final moments of the victims come forward, the country is further left heartbroken.
Now, a recent report has revealed that the Air India pilot, Sumeet Sabharwal, made a promise to his 82-year-old father a few days before the ill-fated flight. According to a revelation by India Cultural Hub, Sumeet, who hailed from Powai, Central Mumbai, had promised his father that he would soon quit his job as a pilot to take care of him full-time. However, little did he know, that he would never get the chance to do so. For the unversed, Sumeet was a well-trained pilot with over 8,300 hours of flying experience.
The unfortunate incident took place around 1:30 pm on June 12, 2025, less than a minute after the flight had taken off from Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport to Gatwick Airport in London. However, within seconds of its take-off, the flight lost control descending from a height of 625 feet. The pilot sent a May Day call. However, it was too late, and before the station could respond, the flight had already collapsed on the roof of a medical college hotel.
There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board, leading to the demise of 241 people on the flight and several trainee doctors in the hostel mess. The flight was also boarded by the former CM of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, who also passed away in the accident. The crash left a sole survivor who was seated on 11 A and was fortunate enough to escape the flight before the plane caught on fire. He is currently being treated in the hospital.
