MI Team's Agni Chopra Chose Cricket Over Bollywood, Despite Being The Son Of Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Film-maker, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is well-known for producing iconic Bollywood films such as the Munna Bhai franchise, 3 Idiots, PK and more. Meanwhile, his wife, Anupama Chopra, is a popular film critic known for her sharp observation of films. However, the son of this Bollywood power couple, Agni Chopra, chose a knife away from the limelight of Bollywood. Instead, he put a hundred per cent effort into his passion for cricket. With many ups and downs in his sports career, Agni now plays for the MI New York team.

Agni Chopra started playing cricket at the age of 6

Agni Chopra had shown great passion for cricket since he was just 6 years old. At this age, he would practice cricket in Shivaji Park, Mumbai. When Agni joined a coaching class, things became difficult for him, reported MSN. Being from a well-known Bollywood family and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's son, most of his teammates and coaches reportedly judged him as an influential kid passing the time with the game. The report said that the young boy would ask his driver to park the car far away so that he could avoid being singled out for his luxury.

Agni Chopra played for the Mizoram cricket team

Agni Chopra went on to score phenomenal runs in any match that he played. He also played for Mumbai on the Under-19 team and became the captain. Then he went on to play for the Under-23 team of Mumbai. Prospects were looking good for the cricketer; however, not receiving a call-back from Mumbai's Ranji team threw a wrench at his plans. An injury and a bad break-up also reportedly added to the issues. For a while, Agni also contemplated quitting his passion, cricket.

It was during this tough time in his professional life that the Mizoram cricket team called Agni Chopra. He made his first-class debut under the Mizoram team and played against Sikkim. In 2024, he scored 5 centuries in the first four matches of the Ranji Trophy. Agni played for the Mizoram team for a duration of two years and also went on to score 234 runs for the team at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy championship.

Agni Chopra had to leave his Indian cricket career due to his American passport

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prohibits people without Indian passports from playing domestic matches. As an American passport holder, Agni Chopra had to leave behind his dreams of an Indian cricket career. However, he still did not give up on his passion. Agni put efforts into playing cricket for the Major League Cricket (MLC), which is a Twenty20 cricket league in the United States.

The MLC was drafting players earlier this year in 2025. On February 19, 2025, when Agni Chopra was flying from San Francisco to Mumbai, he saw a message from his mother after landing. The message revealed that his dream had come true. Agni was a fan of the Mumbai Indians team, and he had been picked up by the MI New York team for $50,000 (Rs. 43,12,662). Agni recently made his debut for the team and would hopefully make a name for himself in the world of sports and US cricket.
