Aamir Khan's first marriage to Reena Dutta was nothing less than a beautiful whirlwind romance story. They used to be neighbours and exchanged glances from their windows before the actor gathered up the courage to approach Reena. But, when finally Aamir had established himself among the top actors and the couple completed 16 years of marriage with two kids, they decided to part ways in 2002. Aamir was left emotionally shaken and dealt with a phase of loneliness and self-doubt. In a new interview, Aamir Khan shared how he unexpectedly found support in Salman Khan and Juhi Chawla during that dark period.
Aamir Khan sat down for a conversation with The Lallantop and revisited a difficult time in his life when he separated from his first wife, Reena Dutta. He shared that the evening Reena left their home, he was filled with a sense of emptiness and confusion. Since the actor had no one around him, he was unsure of how to process the pain. At last, Aamir turned towards alcohol to numb the feelings. But what began as a night of drinking alcohol to cope with his feelings turned into a nightly habit that lasted for a year and a half. Recalling how he used to fall unconscious after drinking, Aamir said:
“Jab ghar me koi nahi tha aur main akelapan mehsoos kar raha tha, mujhe samajh nahi aa raha tha kya karu? To uss din maine botal kholi aur poori botal pee daali aur phir agle dedh saal tak maine…, roz raat ko main daaru pee ke…main sota nahi tha main behosh ho jaata tha.”
But amid the emotional turmoil, Aamir received unexpected support from some industry friends. One such friend was Juhi Chawla. The actor recalled that Juhi came to visit him after finding out about his divorce from a newspaper. Aamir revealed that despite making his debut with Juhi in 1988, he hadn't spoken to her due to some issue between them, but she asked if she could visit him. When Juhi came to visit him, she didn't try to pry but expressed her concern and hoped she could mend things between him and Reena. The thoughtful gesture touched Aamir's heart. He said:
"Out of the blue, Juhi ka phone aaya mujhe. She said I want to come and meet you. I was like, Juhi se to saat saal se baat nahi hui hai. I said Come. Wo mere ghar pe aayi aur usne bola ki maine paper me padha ki aapka aur Reena ka breakup ho gaya, aap log alag-alag rah rahe ho. I said Haa. She said ye bahot galat hua hai, jo bhi hua hai mujhe sunana nahi hai, but aap jaake patch-up karo."
In the same conversation, Aamir Khan shared that another turning point in the phase for him was how Salman Khan came to visit him. For those unaware, the two actors had known each other for several years but didn't share a good bond. However, while Aamir avoided meeting people to stay alone, Salman came over for dinner, and they used to end up talking for hours. The first day when the Dabangg actor came to visit Aamir marked the beginning of their friendship, which has become stronger over the years. Sharing his feelings, Aamir said:
“Uss waqt jab main akela baitha rehta tha, kisi se milta nahi tha, jaise Juhi aayi thi mujhse milne, waise Salman bhi aaye the. Mere ghar pe wo aaye the khane pe aur lambi lambi baatein hui hamari. Aur mai depression se guzar raha tha to maine dil ki baatein khul kar ki unke saath. Unhone mujhse bahut saari baatein kahin. To ek tarah se hamari bonding 2001-2002 ke aas-paas shuru hui hai as friends."
Aamir Khan tied the knot with Reena Dutta in his early 20s in 1986, and they became parents to two kids: a son, Junaid and a daughter, Ira Khan. After the couple parted ways in 2002, Aamir met with Kiran Rao, and they got married in 2005. They welcomed a son, Azad, but parted ways in 2021. Presently, Aamir Khan is dating Gauri Spratt and officially introduced her to the world on his 60th birthday.
